Deb Peterson NYSUT 2020 Retiree of the Year

Deb received the 2020 NYSUT Retiree of the Year Award at the 2021 NYSUT RA. She has been a Champion for Women's Rights all of her life. She is retired from the Haldane School District. In retirement she continued her leadership in NYSUT by joining & leading RC 43's Space Coast Unit as well as taking an active role on NYSUT Retiree Committees.

Ida B. Wells-Barnett: Icon of Black History

Most people with a passing knowledge of Black history are familiar with aspects of the role Ida B. Wells-Barnett played. She was a many faceted woman: journalist, newspaper editor, suffragist, sociologist, civil rights activist and renowned public speaker. As an early leader in the civil rights movement, she was a founding member of the NAACP. She fought her entire life to combat prejudice and violence as well as equal rights for women.

There are always surprises with any re-examination.  As a transplant to Fort Pierce, Florida I learned about black men and women who had made significant contributions to the area and to black history but who were 'unsung' heroes without widespread recognition as is all too common.

2020: Hindsight or Foresight

Today the EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT, or ERA, is just one state shy of putting women's rights into the Constitution. 2/3, or 38 states, must ratify the measure for it to become an official constitutional amendment. Illinois was the 37th last year and the pressing question is which state will 'bring it home'?
