Tis The Season To Be.....

Tis the season to be jolly...generous....compassionate....Of course we should be those things all year long but there are constant reminders this time of year to be 'more'. No matter what your religious, spiritual or lack of faith connection is, more of us give generously this time of year to a variety of what we expect to be wise choices.  While most charitable organizations use your donations well, some misrepresent their fund raising intentions or solicit for phony causes. Keep these simple tips in mind to avoid problems:

•     Watch for Scams. Sometimes people pretend to be a real charity in order to commit fraud. Don't be taken advantage of. Bogus charities will often exploit a natural disaster or tragedy.

•     Don't judge a good cause by its name. Many times names are similar to more famous, legitimate charities and organizations but are not affiliated

•     Verify! Ask why they are collecting donations? What purpose is to be served? You have the right to request and receive a copy of a charity's financial report before you contribute. The best charities pend at least 75% of their budget on the programs they promote.

•     Phone solicitations , telemarketing, are made by paid workers, not volunteers. Ask how much of your donation goes to the cause. Legitimate solicitors must also be registered if calling on behalf of a charity.

•     Don't be pressured. Make an informed decision when you feel comfortable

•     NEVER send cash. Checks are best when made out to the charity, not the caller. If donating online be sure it is secure.

•     Keep good records. Not all donations are tax deductible (It must be a 501(c)(3) organization. The IRS keeps a database of qualified organizations called the Exempt Organizations Select Check Tool which is available on line.
