Did you know Medicare covers many PREVENTIVE SERVICES? You must meet basic eligibility standards and when you do.....you have the right to receive these services regardless of whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan.
WITH ORIGINAL MEDICARE you will have NO coinsurance or deductible (as long as it is a preventive care service recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force and you use a doctor or other health care provider who accepts assignment. PLEASE NOTE: there may be additional related services (such as diagnosis, additional tests or procedures) for which you can be charged. An example might be having a colonoscopy (free) and the doctor finds a polyp which she then removes (fees apply). There may be facility fees charged by hospitals, for instance, when you get a preventive service at their site. Consultation fees may be charged by a doctor before or after a service. To be fully covered by a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must see 'in network' providers.
Original Medicare still has a deductible and / or 20% co insurance for some preventive services. Some of these services are glaucoma screenings, diabetes self-management trainings, barium enemas (to detect colon cancer) and digital rectal exams (to detect prostate cancer). Follow the appropriate guidelines to be sure you are fully covered. Some exams are only covered every few years, others you must meet specific criteria in order to be covered in full.
