Little Things That Make A BIG Difference
“Think globally but act locally” is a phrase that once was popular and should be again. Many of talk about world problems and then feel overwhelmed by the scope of the issue and so we are incapacitated, taking little or no action. That is exactly the wrong response. Small actions can make a big difference.
Frequently credited with single handedly starting the environmental awareness movement, Rachel Carson wrote the book THE SILENT SPRING. In it, she warned of our overuse of chemicals and the dangers to the environment that humans posed in their reckless, indiscriminate use of pollutants. At the rate of over 100 species of living things becoming extinct almost daily, her concerns seem even more relevant today.
We can all make a difference, starting in our backyards, to the world we live in making the environment better, safer, cleaner. START....by planting only indigenous seeds. Invasive species, whether animal/plant or 'other' have no natural predators so they take over quickly. USE only organic and untreated products to create a safer space. BE AWARE and sensitive to issues like landscaping to attract beneficial insects. BE EDUCATED about the threats facing our wildlife and wildlands. BE AN EXPLORER who goes online and virtually 'sees' firsthand the work done in the field and the places around the world that are most endangered. BE A PROBLEM SOLVER, not a problem maker. Find the tools and information you need to make planet healthy choices in daily living. Learn how to reduce the threat of climate change and conserve our forests and oceans. BE VIGILANT by reading labels. BE VOCAL in telling friends and family about what you are doing and why it is important. Share ways you can make the community a more sustainable place to live. Ask others, like retailers and vendors where you shop to stop carrying harmful products like those containing neonicotinoids. BE AN INFORMED VOTER so policy makers write legislation that will positively help the environment. BE SUPPORTIVE , whether it is wildlands , air, the oceans or living species that you choose to protect first, give what you can to support their efforts. Whether a one time contribution, monthly donations or legacy gift, be generous.
